As part of an internship for the African Science Research Institute ASRI Andrea Stevenson created three facial reconstructions of a nineteenth century skull. A combination of traditional 2D illustration and computer modeling was used to produce illustrative reconstructions without requiring a physical skull.
The skull chosen for reconstruction dated from the 1840s, and had been excavated from a burial site in central Illinois. The individual was believed to have been an African-American female, between the ages of 30 and 39.
In order to illustrate the uncertainties of facial reconstruction, the same skull was reconstructed using three possible data sets, for a woman of average, obese, or slender build. Other variables difficult to determine from the skull, such as hair and skin color, were given different representations.
